Well, these sort of castings can be very good. You can find new artists and therefore not being so many artists that is known, like it is in Sweden.
According to wikipedia the casting is right now in Oporto. (Though the name was Porto first. :O)

Portugal was considered to withdraw, because of the economic crisis in Portugal, but on 30 November 2011, RTP confirmed its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

On 9 December 2011, RTP called for songs for the national selection. Singers can apply through the RTP official website before the 31 December 2011. They can advance to a special audition that will be held on 5-6 January 2012 in Lisbon and on 9-10 January in Oporto. Singers will be able to sing in Portuguese or in a foreign language (e.g English). Established artists can send in their songs to RTP and will not have to go through the audition.

A special jury along with RTP will choose 12 candidates, which will be announced by RTP. Another five candidates will be chosen by the jury as reserve candidates just in case any of the initial 12 selected withdraws.

RTP will then invite six composers from various musical styles to compose songs. Composers and authors will create new songs specially for the 12 candidates, in order to suit their vocal skills. The songs must be no longer than three minutes. The songs have to be in Portuguese. RTP has hired two music producers to work in coordination with the composers in order to give the final touches to the 12 candidate entries.

The final of Festival Da Canção will be held on 10 March 2012. The winner will be decided through a combination of jury voting and SMS voting at a 50-50% stake.

On 2 January 2012, RTP announced that they received more than 400 applications.and made some changes in the castings schedule: while the castings in Lisbon is schedule to January 5 and 6, the castings in Oporto is sheduled to January 10 and 11.

the days of the castings in Porto were changed BTW.

In the casting it doesn't matter the language but they like people to sing portuguese.
In FC it's a rule.
We're in ESC for many many many years and we never sang in another language. Some people say it's stupid because we could get a great reault with a song in english. Well, i fon't care. There are Amazing songs in portuguese and it's a beautifull language. I think all the countries should sing in their own language because there are such amazing languages all over the europe.
For Portugal it doesn't really matter in what language we sing because we'll never win. I think we should try one day in english but for example if i was going to represent my country to ESC i would prefer to sing in my own language! It's just a matter of taste and RTP wants it in portuguese and we just have to thank them for making FC this year lol!

actually all the songs we see in english have such stupid lyrics (now i remember Popular lol!

, and i loved that song) ... If people would vote for the music it could be good for us to send an english one, but people vote for the country and not the music/voice frustrated

The best thing would maybe to let people sing without knowing what country is singing. It would be hard to implement but most fair.

Carlos Costa is so going to win. I'll explain it to you. This guy, if he was born in the USA or UK would be huge worldwide. He participated in our version of Pop Idol and got the 3rd place (which is quite expectable as Portugal is more of a rock country and his main reportoire is Pop).
I also expect good songs from Ricardo Soler and Rui Andrade. I love this new method! Now we need great songs and we can get a 2nd place in Baku (not first since there is no money to organize ESC xD)

PS: Rui can't have another "Disney" song, please!

ok i agree with you although i don't want carlos to win it! He has a terrible voice and i don't think we would have a good place. anyway of course every girl are going to vote for him (and now you're thinking "and the ones who don't vote for him, will vote for Rui" - True!).
I just saw that every participant are from a talent show. If RTP only want "famous" people why the hell did they do the castings?!

And Rui's song was not disney! It was great Very Happy

Eurovision is always a top program for RTP. They only have more viewers when it comes to football games. The national final also has lots of viewers, especially now when they don't have any top program, except the informational ones.

In 2010 RTP were the 2nd more seen channel... and i'm not sure that so many people see ESC and FC (maybe last year because of Homens da Luta)

Last year it had 7.5% rating and 23.9% share. It wasn't the most seen show of the day but it had 2 times more viewes than RTP gets on a normal saturday.
The 2011 ESC had a 19,6 rating which was the lowest in years. This can be explained by the Portuguese absence in the final and that an important football game was shown in another channel.
