Martha Grimes & Inspector Jury novels
I am wondering if anyone else loves them? I'm addicted to them.

my book collection looks funny, I have all novels by her and you can see how I got each year more eager to read them - at first (the first novels published) there are the german paperbacks, then the german hard cover books, then the english paper backs and then the english hard covers (the few last ones published) the first book I read in English was by her.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha_Grimes :
Grimes is best known for her series of novels featuring Richard Jury, an inspector with Scotland Yard, and his friend Melrose Plant, a British aristocrat who has given up his titles. Each of the Jury mysteries is named after a pub. Her page-turning, character-driven tales fall into the mystery subdivision of "cozies." In 1983, Grimes received the Nero Wolfe Award for best mystery of the year for The Anodyne Necklace.

I know they have translated into loads of languages. almost can't imagine not in your country.
they are so funny, I always look like this when reading:
especially Melrose Plant, the ex-earl who has dropped his title because he is not interested in wasting his time with the "penguins" in the parliament and his terrible aunt who wants to sue the butcher and any shoip owner because by accident she put her foot into a chamber pot in front of the shop. the location is always changing between london and the village where the ex-earl is living, Long Piddleton. the ex-earl always tries to get rid of his nerve-racking aunt, in one book he hires an heremit whose job it is to walk around the garden and to terrify the aunt when she comes for visit. that was after the goat he bought didn't have any success with keeping her away.
first one review: http://www.topmystery.com/books/review/The-Man-With-a-Load-of-Mischief
they write: Pretty good start to a pretty good series - My wife has been a fan of the Richard Jury mysteries for some time so I finally decided to give them a try, and this is the first in the series. Chief Inspector Jury, a homicide specialist at Scotland Yard who should have been a Superintendent by now but doesn't want to be relegated to a desk job, is a first-rate detective and something of a loner. He's called to a village in Northamptonshire to deal with two murders committed a week apart, each in a different pub. The mystery itself is pretty well done -- the author doesn't give anything away and the "whodunit," when it finally arrives, is perfectly believable -- but Grimes's mÃtier is creating interesting, fully realized characters. There's Jury himself, there's Melrose Plant, a very intelligent ex-earl who lives in the village and who involves himself in the investigation, there's Plant's Aunt Agatha, who's lucky no one has strangled her before this, and there's the hypochondriac Sgt. Wiggins, who sometimes shows a surprising side. Those are the series regulars, or will be. The various suspects -- and there's a lot of them -- are also well thought out and Grimes has a nice ear for the ironic turn of phrase. On top of all that, she slips in some fascinating bits about the history of various public house names, one of which supplies the title of each book in the series. My only complaint is that the author has a sloppy grasp of chronology: Jury is supposed to be about forty years old in the present day (1981), so he was born about 1941 -- but he also is described as having been seven years old when his mother was killed in the last year of the Blitz, which is also 1941.

Re: Martha Grimes & Inspector Jury novels
thanks for the offer REb!
well but I'm just afraid it would get lost you know... so you shouldn't do such a bold thing with a favorite book of yours
But if you want to take the rist I will gladly read it of course... maybe I don't need to send it back with the post if we able to keep up our personal meeting habits
it's up to you.
